PROGRAM DATES: August 29 - June 8, 2012
PROGRAM HOURS: 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM
Before and After School Care is avaliable
The program will provide an environment that is safe, nurturing and academically rich. It will engage children and encourage them to use their curiosity, their observations and their desire to explore, create, and solve problems. Children will learn by doing, so learning is designed to be interactive, inventive and experiential. Classroom learning activities will be based on knowledge of child development, how children learn best, and an understanding of each child's individual strengths and interests.
The Shining Stars Program utilizes the Maryland Model for School Readiness that is designed to ensure that your child is prepared for kindergarten. Throughout the school year, your child's progress will be assessed based on a "work sampling system." Assessment of five domains will include social and emotional development, physical development, linguistic growth, and cognitive development.
The Shining Stars Program curriculum includes the following:
Basic academic foundations -- language development, reading, writing, math, science, history and geography, music and art " Enrichment -- music and rhythm, art, fine and gross motor activities, etc.
Practical skills -- organization, respect and care for materials, cooking, gardening, caring for animals, etc.
Social foundations -- manners, taking turns, sharing, learning from each other, and respect and caring for others.
Shared Opportunity Service, Inc. understands that there is no educational program that has a better basis in research and a better return in investment than a pre-K program. Out staff recognizes that in pre-K, students learn fundamentals like counting, the alphabet, sharing, and taking turns. Research confirms that children who attend a pre-K program are less likely to drop out later in their educational careers, repeat grades, or need remedial classes as they move through the education system.
